On Thursday, from 1-2pm, we will have a science project walkthrough where students, teachers, and family members can see the projects and ask questions about what the students created.  We would love to have you join us if you’re able!

As part of our Physical Education and Healthy Living curriculum, our grade 5 class is planning on attending a field trip at “On The Green/On The Beach” (located in Tecumseh) on Friday, June 24^th, 2011.

Students will be participating in various physical activities such as basketball, sand volleyball, and ping pong. We will also have a healthy lunch prepared by the staff at “On The Green/On The Beach.” (No outside food or beverages will be permitted). The cost of the field trip is $17 per student (which includes lunch).

The cost of busing is quite expensive for the day. To alleviate this cost, we are looking for parents to drive students, instead of taking a bus. If you choose to drive, there will be an additional waiver form for you to sign. The cost for the parents for lunch is $12 per adult.

Students are encouraged to bring the following on the field trip: sunscreen, hat, empty water bottle (to be filled there with water as often as needed),

In this unit, your child will:

• Use patterns to solve multiplication problems.
• Use a calculator to explore patterns in decimals.
• Model patterns in tables and on graphs.
• Analyse and create tiling patterns.
• Use a computer to create a tiling pattern.

Patterns occur in many forms.  Ask your child to describe some of the patterns learned in class.  Often adults use geometric patterns to solve problems. Masons, artists, and graphic designers all routinely use patterns in their line of work.  Discuss with your child that many different careers use patterns in geometry.  Making some connections with your child fosters a deeper understanding of the math that is taught in school. 

Here are some suggestions for activities you can do at home:

• Search the Internet to discover the Fibonacci sequence.
• Look for number and geometry patterns in tiles, quilts, game boards, etc. in your home

 In this unit, students will read, talk, and write about games and sports.  Students will explore ways of collecting and presenting information, expressing opinions through writing, and learning and teaching instructions for games. Throughout the unit, students will be prompted to make connections to their own experiences, and to share their opinions and consider those of others.

You are invited to be part of our unit in a variety of ways.  For example:

• Invite your child to tell you about some of the information we have read about at school.
• Share information about games you or your family members played when you were young.
• Look through newspapers or magazines together to find examples of opinion articles, columns, or reviews.
• Share your opinions with your child about video games and other types of games.
• Play a games your child learned at school; then teach your child a game that he or she can share with classmates.
